The win of Street Value at Ascot last Saturday underlines the training ability of Michael Grant.
The patient mentor explained post race that the mare had to overcome feet and viral problems before returning to her best in the 2200 metre event.
Grant who is preparing to leave Perth and head to New Zealand, the home country of his wife Caroline, who has formed no small part in the success of the Grant training establishment at Henley Brook.
In fact the training centre on the outskirts of the Swan Valley was once the home of legendary trainer Frank Maynard and has under gone significant improvements since the Grants took possession of the property and is currently on the market*.
“Frank still comes out here to work his horses and big race winners like Black Tom, Cats Fun and Delta Gee have finished their final workouts here before some of their major wins.” Grant told perthracing.com.au.
“The house is almost a palace and Caroline spared no expense when she re decorated the family home, importing some of the building materials from all over the world.”
Grant decided to have a rethink of the direction that his core business was heading and decided that it was time to make a move to New Zealand.
“Essentially I have been a developer of horses. I have made a good living by buying, developing and seeling younger horses. I also broke and pre trained many of Bob peters good horses for about eight years.”
“Training horses has slowly started to take over most of my time and I haven’t generated the support I would have envisaged over the years, despite winning some of the bigger races in the state.”
“We have identified a wonderful property in Cambridge, New Zealand in the heart of racing territory and I am looking forward to purchasing it.”
“We will still keep horses in work over here in Perth with some of the local trainers and I already have broodmares over east and in New Zealand.”
“Delta Gee is with Leon Corstens and he is very happy with her. Wave Rock is in foal to Pentire and Admiring has just trialled.”
“The win of Street Value was not unexpected as she was in the best condition that I have been able to produce her. She has had issues with her feet and viruses have prevented her from racing at her top.”
